Tacoma's Story

The College Success Foundation (CSF) opened the CSF - Tacoma office in 2009 expanding our work to inspire low-income, underserved students to finish high school by providing the unique integrated systems of supports and scholarships they need to graduate from college and succeed in life.  With demonstrated success in our initial Achievers Scholarship Program at Foss, Lincoln and Mt. Tahoma high schools, CSF expanded its reach into two additional Tacoma high schools in 2009 – Stadium and Wilson.   In addition to the five high schools, CSF - Tacoma also serves six middle schools: Baker, First Creek, Giaudrone, Stewart and Truman.

The College Success Foundation Board of Directors, as part of a comprehensive strategic plan that calls for working intensively with several Washington school districts, identified Tacoma as the first school district to receive expanded CSF services.  Partnering with Tacoma Public Schools, local foundations and businesses, we work to ensure that Tacoma students are prepared for college and are able to succeed and complete their bachelor’s degrees.  While high school graduation rates saw significant increases in 2013 and 2014, the need still exists for continued programs that encourage students to succeed in earning a bachelor’s or other post-secondary degree or certificate.

The range of programs offered by the College Success Foundation - Tacoma includes:

  • Early college awareness outreach in grades 7 – 8, including signing up for the state's College Bound Scholarship program.
  • High school graduation planning, college awareness and readiness in grades 9 - 12.
  • College advising and mentoring in grades 11 - 12.
  • Peer navigator support for local college students.
  • Alumni and career planning supports.
