18th Annual Governors' Cup Golf Tournament

Former Washington State Governors Gary Locke and Christine Gregoire joined business and community representatives for an outstanding day of golf at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge at the 18th annual Governors’ Cup Golf Tournament.

Governor Inslee was out of state but sent his wishes and thanks to sponsors, attendees and the College Success Foundation. As he stated, “together we can ensure that all of our young people have access to quality higher education options, as well as the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

James Dorsey, along with Governors Gregoire and Locke kicked off the day with a morning welcome while thanking sponsors for supporting the Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth and the College Success Foundation.

This year’s tournament raised over $395,000 from more than 50 sponsors and donors. Total dollars raised since 2001 surpass $7 million dollars, with more than 514 student scholarships awarded.

Gary Locke, 21st Governor of Washington State and the College Success Foundation created the Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth in 2001 to support foster youth who come from varied backgrounds, but all have one thing in common – they are foster youth aging out of the system and on their own without many resources.

At the reception and awards ceremony following the tournament, we heard from Alexis Arambul, recent graduate of Washington State University with a B.A. in Political Science. As Alexis stated, “attending college was the first time since entering foster care where I felt completely in control of my life…I didn’t feel afraid, I felt free”. She went on to say that “statistics say that less than three percent of foster youth graduate college, I beat those odds, and I know that, with your support, many more will, too.”

Next year’s Governors’ Cup will be held on September 9, 2019.  For further information contact Teresa Goodman, teresa@teresaigoodman.com.
