Fostering a sense of belonging: College students cheering on the home team

July 10, 2023

More than 200 college students and CSF College Coaches from the Seattle-Tacoma area gleefully joined in College Night at the Seattle Mariners. Although the weather outside was cold, rainy and windy, the mood inside was cheerful, fun and collegial.

CSF College Coaches hosted the event as part of their outreach to students to foster a sense of belonging. While students put a strong focus on their college courses and academic rigor, carving out time to have fun and connect with others is also important to the college experience. In fact, it helps students be more successful.

College Program Manager Rosalyn shared: ”This was an important aspect of our holistic approach to supporting students in a very robust and well-rounded way and I was happy to be able to share that experience with students.”

College Coaches regularly host activities to foster a sense of belonging. Students from all across the region attending college in Western Washington were invited. They enjoyed meeting up with their classmates–but also seeing their classmates who were such a part of their high school experience who now attend different colleges.

The students enjoyed cheering on the Mariners in the thrilling game against the Houston Astros. They also got to socialize, chat, and laugh with old and new friends. For many students, this was their first time attending a major league game.

College Coach Elias shared, “I think it’s important to provide this opportunity to students because many have never had the chance to experience a Mariners game, let alone possess the necessary funds.”

Students returned to their schoolwork energized and prepared to take on the final weeks of the school year.

College student Arian summed it up well: “If I were to describe the…Mariners game with one word, it would be EXTRAORDINARY! It is so easy to forget about our own well-being while consistently putting in hard work to stay on top of everything throughout college. Those couple of hours reminded me of the importance of separating time for myself, which is something my CSF coach and I discuss very often. A huge shout-out to all CSF coaches and students for taking the time to be part of this cheerful moment! Thank you!!”
