Youth Law Day: Inspiring Kent School District students to pursue legal careers

June 11, 2023

In May, a group of 50 enthusiastic CSF Scholars from the Kent School District, embarked on an exploratory journey to the courthouse in downtown Seattle. This immersive event, known as Youth Law Day, aims to provide students with invaluable insights into various legal professions. Filled with engaging activities, expert panels, captivating demonstrations, and even a mock trial, this event was sure to ignite students’ aspirations for future careers in the justice system.

A warm welcome and career panel

The students were warmly greeted by The Honorable Richard A. Jones, a respected United States District Court Judge in Seattle since 2007, who set a positive and encouraging tone for the day. Following the introduction, the students participated in a career panel. The panel was comprised of a diverse group of federal courthouse professionals, including a social worker, a stenographer, an interpreter, a public defense attorney, and a forensic accountant–each offering unique perspectives on their respective roles within the legal system.

During the panel discussion, courthouse professionals shared valuable advice with the students, emphasizing the significance of volunteering and internships in shaping their eventual careers. They described the different paths available in the legal system, shedding light on potential salaries and the number of hours typically worked per week.

Lunch and law trivia

To ensure the students remained energized, courthouse officials led law trivia during lunch. As an added element of fun, prizes were awarded to the winners, fostering a sense of friendly competition and rewarding their enthusiasm for learning.

In a lively display of law enforcement collaboration, two K-9 dogs and their handlers showcased their remarkable skills in the field. The students witnessed firsthand how these highly trained canines work alongside officers, providing valuable assistance in various law enforcement scenarios. This demonstration not only showcased the importance of teamwork but also highlighted the unique jobs available within the legal system beyond traditional courtroom settings.

The mock trial experience

The pinnacle of the day was the mock trial, where student volunteers were divided into groups and given the opportunity to practice their legal skills in a real courtroom setting. This immersive experience allowed the students to assume different roles, such as attorneys, witnesses, and even jurors, enabling them to gain practical insights into the complexities of the legal process. Under the guidance of legal professionals, the students were able to showcase their critical thinking, public speaking, and analytical abilities, fostering a sense of empowerment and sparking their passion for the legal field.

The importance of Youth Law Day

Activities like Youth Law Day are essential for setting an aspirational stage for students who would otherwise not gain exposure to such specialized industries like that of the legal system. By providing hands-on experiences, expert guidance, and opportunities to engage face-to-face with professionals, students gain a deeper understanding of the various career paths available to them. Such exposure helps to demystify the legal profession, breaking down barriers and instilling confidence in their ability to pursue a future in law. We hope the impact of Youth Law Day will continue to resonate with these students, shaping their paths and helping them realize their potential within legal professions.
