Meet CSF Scholars Guadalupe and Crystal

April 27, 2022

Empowering Youth Tacoma is right around the corner! As we prepare for this special event celebrating the class of 2022, we’d like to introduce you to two of our graduating College Success Foundation-Tacoma scholars at Mount Tahoma High School: Guadalupe (top left) and Crystal (top right).

Sparking interests, igniting passions

Crystal discovered her passion for medicine in high school, thanks to her CSF advisor from 9th and 10th grade. “I used to want to be a scientist, but once I got to high school, Michael [my CSF advisor] took us to Tacoma Community College, and I learned about their nursing program,” Crystal says. “It gave me interest in medicine.” She is currently deciding whether she wants to pursue a chemistry or neuroscience major once she arrives at University of Washington Tacoma this fall; ultimately, she wants to become a physician’s assistant or doctor.

Guadalupe knows firsthand how formative her school’s educators have been for her development. “The teachers I’ve had have really inspired me, and I want to be able to make an impact,” she reflects. “I want to major in secondary education because I want to teach math … I realized I wanted to form a different connection with people, and I feel like I can do that by being a teacher.” Guadalupe looks forward to attending Whitworth University later this year.

CSF supported both Guadalupe and Crystal with crucial steps in their decisions to apply for college. “For me, the whole program alone has been so helpful because we [got] to go on field trips and experience being at different schools,” Crystal says. “We [got] a variety.”

This year especially, it’s been really hard. I wouldn’t have gotten so much done if it wasn’t for Melody [my CSF advisor]. Her just being there for me has been really helpful this year.
