Student spotlight: Esmeralda Rivera

November 28, 2023

We present Esmeralda Rivera from Central Washington University. She aspires to major in accounting and is actively pursuing her dream job at a tax firm. Read on for her inspiring story!

Q: How did you decide on which university/college to attend? Did you have other schools in mind?

A: I chose Central Washington University because it was close enough to my family and I would be able to go home whenever I had the chance. I toured Eastern Washington University, Washington State University and University of Washington, but due to the financial side, I decided to go to CWU.

Q: What are you majoring and how did you decide your major?

A: Growing up, I have always liked numbers and solving problems. I also have a passion for helping others, so I started thinking about what I wanted to do as a career. I talked to my advisor and he suggested I look into accounting classes. I took an accounting class in high school and ever since then I decided I knew I wanted my career to be in accounting.

Q: What is your dream job?

A: My dream job is to work for an accounting firm as a tax manager. Tax has become one of my favorite things to do as an accountant ever since I took an internship with an accounting firm. While I was working for this firm, you are not only committed on working on one thing, but I could also do fun things like participate in community events!

Q: Are there any clubs, activities, or involvements you are a part of outside of class?

A: I am part of Beta Alpha Psi, MEChA, TRIO and First-generation club. What I like about these clubs is that they make you feel welcomed and they encourage each member of the club to achieve the club goals. For example, Beta Alpha Psi brings business and accounting guest speakers to talk about their personal experiences in their careers, which I find very insightful!

Q: What is a challenge you have encountered in college and how did you navigate it? (Or how are you navigating it?)

A: I think that my biggest challenge started when I was a junior in high school when I began to work and manage school at the same time. Coming into college was a bit difficult because I didn’t know what to be aware of since I didn’t have any family that had attended a university. It was hard becoming so independent at a young age, but it certainly helped me to be ready for college.

Q: How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your personal life and any additional commitments, such as family obligations or work?

A: I prioritize my goals and schedule out my dates. For example, I know that Monday-Friday I will be busy with work and school and don’t plan anything outside of the box if it’s not needed. On weekends I plan to spend time with my family.

Q: What student supports/resources have you utilized that have been most helpful to you?

A: I believe that CSF has been the only resource that has helped me overcome many things  mentally and financially. I am very grateful for Osbaldo!

Q: What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow students?

A: Remember that you are here for a reason and that one grade will not justify the person you are. Most importantly: learn and retain the information given. Also, reach out to professors and mentors for help. Trust me there are people out there that really do care for you!
