Tacoma Public Schools receives national recognition

December 13, 2022

For over two decades, College Success Foundation has been a proud partner of Tacoma Public Schools—working together to increase college access for traditionally underserved students.

Joshua Garcia, superintendent of Tacoma Public Schools and member of CSF-Tacoma’s Regional Board of Directors, recently penned an op-ed for the Tacoma News-Tribune. In it, he highlights many gains for the district; celebrates its teachers, families, and community partners; and refers to a favorable feature in Newsweek magazine.

The national article recognizes Tacoma Public Schools as a leader in the social and emotional learning (SEL) space. After 10 years of applying SEL techniques throughout its schools, the district is reaping the long-term benefits of centering students’ mental health. Mr. Garcia considers SEL an essential piece of the comprehensive puzzle geared toward increasing graduation rates. In 2010, the graduation rate for Tacoma Public Schools was 55%. The district expects to graduate more than 90% of its high school seniors this spring.

“Mr. Garcia is an inspiring leader and trusted partner who is steadfast in creating positive student outcomes through safe, healthy learning environments,” said Senait Habte, CSF-Tacoma’s executive regional director. “We are grateful to be able to work alongside him, the teachers and the students of Tacoma Public Schools for these many years.”

CSF’s college prep and access services are available to thousands of students who attend Baker Middle School, First Creek Middle School, Giaudrone Middle School, Gray Middle School, Stewart Middle School, Truman Middle School, Foss High School, Lincoln High School, Mount Tahoma High School, Stadium High School, or Silas High School.
