Finding Belonging and Purpose: Leela Arno’s Story
When Leela Arno joined the College Success Foundation–DC (CSF-DC) in 2023, she was searching for more than academic guidance, she was looking for a community that believed in her potential.
Her journey with CSF-DC began thanks to her college counselor, Mr. Saba, who saw her drive and encouraged her to apply to the CSF-DC Scholars Program. What started as an opportunity for support quickly grew into something much more, a second home.
“My advisors would check in with me about school, my grades, and my future plans, but more importantly, they cared about my health and well-being,” Leela shared. “CSF-DC’s interest in me and my future made me feel safe, seen, and important.”
Through mentorship, encouragement, and genuine care, Leela found a space where she could show up as her authentic self.
“CSF-DC never makes me feel like I have to sugarcoat my feelings,” she said. “I’ve never felt left out or like an outcast. The staff is always ready to listen, understand what I need, and help me develop a plan to achieve my goals.”
For Leela, belonging to CSF-DC means having a lifelong network of support, a community ready to walk beside her through every challenge and success.
“Being in the CSF-DC Scholars Program means I will always have a support system,” she reflected. “I never have to feel like I’m struggling alone.”
This fall, Leela took center stage as the High School Student Speaker at the 18th Annual CSF-DC/Costco Fundraising Breakfast, sharing her story with more than 400 guests. Her powerful words captured this year’s theme, “The Power of Belonging,” and reminded everyone why CSF-DC’s mission matters.
Now a senior at Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School, Leela is preparing for her next big step, college. She plans to attend Fort Valley State University this fall, where she will major in Animal Science and continue chasing her dreams.
Leela’s story is a testament to what’s possible when students are supported, encouraged, and embraced by a community that believes in them. When students feel they belong, they find their purpose, and they soar.
