CSF Scholars from Auburn participate in IP Law Day
Becoming a lawyer is something that many children dream of becoming. It’s likely among the top few careers that pop into their heads when they imagine their future jobs. But just like any career, there are specialties within the field that people can focus on.
Recently, 30 high school students from the Auburn School District were invited to participate in the 2024 Youth Intellectual Property (IP) Law Day hosted and facilitated by Seattle law firm, Stoel Rives LLP. Throughout the day, students learned all about this precise law specialty.

To start off the morning, students went over legal concepts, including different practices of law, academic requirements, hiring procedures and the importance of diversity in the legal profession. Later in the day, students attentively listened to presentations on three types of Intellectual Property: patents/trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks using real-life and relatable examples to illustrate the world of IP Law.

The day concluded with students experiencing a moot court case, McDonald’s vs. McDowell’s–a fictional restaurant from the movie, Coming To America. Students had the opportunity to advocate for either the plaintiff (McDonald’s) or the defendant (McDowell’s).
Starting career exploration early
Various career exploration activities are offered to students throughout the CSF program. Gaining exposure to careers before heading off to college, helps students gain inspirational insights about the diverse job opportunities available to them. For first-gen students or students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, it’s important to get the chance to visit local businesses to physically visualize themselves working in various fields. A career-connected experience like this can inspire them to establish goals for their own higher education journey and eventual career plans.

The career exploration day left a lasting impression on all CSF Scholars. A special thank you to Stoel Rives LLP and lawyers Brian Park, Stacie Foster and Steven Lawrenz for hosting CSF Scholars from the Auburn School District.
