Atray Lee: This Is What Youth Leadership Looks Like

February 13, 2026

CSF-DC Scholar Atray Lee, a senior at Thurgood Marshall Academy, is already making a powerful impact in his community through his voice, vision, and leadership. His passion for civic engagement was recently on full display when he took the stage at Project Soapbox, an initiative of Mikva Challenge that empowers young people to speak out on issues that matter. There, Atray delivered a compelling, award-winning speech addressing the proposed youth curfew in Washington, DC.

Project Soapbox encourages students to use their voices to create meaningful change, and Atray rose to that challenge with clarity, conviction, and courage. His speech thoughtfully questioned common narratives surrounding youth and public policy while highlighting themes of justice, accountability, and the real-life experiences of young people in the District. His powerful message earned him recognition as a Mikva finalist and first-place winner, an honor that reflects not only his talent as a speaker but also his deep commitment to advocacy and community impact.

Atray described the moment as standing “clear in my purpose, firm in my convictions,” a phrase that perfectly captures his character as a young leader. He credits the teachers who encouraged him to think critically and speak boldly, as well as civic leaders and organizations that listen to young voices, not just as leaders of tomorrow, but as leaders today.

His leadership journey has also been shaped by his time with CSF-DC. Although he joined the program later than many of his peers, becoming a scholar during his junior year, he quickly found connection, mentorship, and a sense of belonging. He shares that one of the most meaningful parts of his experience has been building strong relationships with mentors and peers who uplift and motivate him. He also points to CSF-DC’s college trips for expanding his perspective and the Level Up program (formerly Saturday Academy) for providing both academic and personal support that strengthened his confidence and goals.

Looking ahead, Atray has his sights set on college, with American University currently at the top of his list as he awaits additional admissions decisions. Wherever he chooses to go, one thing is certain: Atray Lee is already leading, inspiring, and creating change, and his future is just getting started.
