Primary Responsibilities
- Review each scholarship application impartially and thoroughly
- Understand and effectively use evaluation tools and scoring rubrics provided by CSF
- Score applications based on established criteria
Key Qualities of an Effective Scholarship Volunteer Reader
- Understanding of Education & Equity: Familiarity with challenges faced by low-income, first-generation students, and systemic issues in K-20 education (e.g., affordability, persistence, and debt burden)
- Objective & Unbiased: Ability to make impartial decisions, free from personal biases. Confidentiality and objectivity are paramount
- Generalist Approach: Evaluate applications holistically, considering the applicant’s entire profile, not just specific aspects
- Confidentiality: Sign and adhere to CSF’s confidentiality agreement, ensuring all application details are kept private
- Reason & Judgment: Apply thoughtful analysis and reason in your scoring decisions, recognizing that evaluation is both an art and a science
Expectations and Requirements
- Complete required CSF training (in-person, videos, or readings)
- Follow CSF guidelines and processes accurately
- Be mindful of the time commitment required for thorough evaluations
- Alert staff to any issues or discrepancies with applications
- Provide constructive feedback to improve the review process
- Meet all deadlines for evaluation and scoring
- Make objective, fair judgments based on the available information
- Maintain confidentiality and respect for applicants and colleagues
- Treat all participants, peers, and staff with respect and professionalism
