Annual Governors’ Cup Builds Bright Futures for Alumni of Foster Care
Former Governor Gary Locke and Former First Spouse of Washington state Trudi Inslee, recently welcomed dozens of golfers to the Governors’ Cup Golf Tournament at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. Now in its 24th year, this annual event brings business and community leaders together to raise funds for the Washington State Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth, which enables alumni of foster care to attend college in Washington.

This unique scholarship benefits 25-35 new scholars each year, providing annual financial support for up to five years so they can complete their undergraduate studies. Since its inception, more than 750 alumni of foster care have received a scholarship. This year’s event raised more than $324,280.
During the reception, Governor’s Scholarship for Foster Youth alum Miriam shared remarks about how the scholarship changed the trajectory of her life:

“10 years ago, I was deeply troubled about how I was going to acquire a college education as a Youth in Foster Care. I had a strong desire to work in Government, but without funds, that desire remained a wish. It was not until I came across an opportunity of a lifetime, the Washington State Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth program. This was the alleviation of all my stress and the healing of my discouragement. This scholarship afforded me the opportunity to acquire not only a college education but also opened me to a world of new possibilities in life. It changed my life from that of a victim of life circumstances to a victor who can take charge of their life, believing that nothing is impossible.”
