Josselyn Guerrero

Meet Josselyn Guerrero from Yakima, Washington, who is currently a Central Washington University student. Read on to learn about her dream job and how she’s preparing for it with a double major!

What is your hometown?

I was born and raised in Yakima, Washington.

How did you choose Central Washington University?

I chose Central Washington University because of my major and the proximity to home. I am a Running Start student and received vast help from the CSF program in my high school. They were the ones to introduce me to this university and help me with my application. I was able to receive amazing help from resources on CWU’s campus and was drawn to the welcoming environment this university has to offer.

What is your major?

I am a double major in Accounting and Business Administration with a specialization in Finance.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be a Certified Public Accountant and one day own my own business, allowing me to be my own boss.

Any clubs, activities or interests you are a part of outside of class?

I love spending time with my family and friends! That is when I’m not partaking in the accounting club, participating in VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) or being a tour guide for Central Washington University.

What has been the most surprising thing for you so far about college?

The most surprising thing about college for me is that nobody is on the same path, yet everyone is eager to help you get to where you want to be. There are so many resources available, one just must step out of their comfort zone and take advantage of them.

What is a challenge you have encountered in college, and how did you navigate it?

As a first-generation student, I am navigating university on my own. This often brings hardships and challenges that I have no idea how to tackle. Confiding in professors and faculty members who are more knowledgeable than I am has been the best decision I could have made. Making sure to ask questions that were specific to me allowed me to consider career choices and opportunities that are beneficial to me.

What student supports and resources have you utilized that have been most helpful to you?

As a CWU student, I have utilized support resources from my on-campus job as a tour guide, and I have also received tremendous support from CSF and Kassandra Mendez, my CSF college coach. These resources, alongside my professors, have been a huge reason for my continued education.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow students?

A piece of advice I have for students is that no question is a dumb question! Many students might have the same question you are hesitant to ask, or it might be a unique one that is more specific to your situation. Whichever it is, asking it will only allow you to gain more knowledge, and this is the time when you get to act as a sponge and soak it all up.
