CSF-Seattle college students commemorate milestones with joy

August 16, 2023

Success without celebration is like squandering hidden treasure; its true value remains concealed unless you allow yourself to revel in it. Recognizing the immense dedication and hard work of our students, especially those completing their first year of college, our CSF-Seattle team planned a collection of vibrant year-end celebrations. These events served as a testament to the scholars’ remarkable achievements, emphasizing the importance of commemorating their accomplishments against the odds.

First-generation college celebrations

The University of Washington-Seattle has the largest concentration of CSF Scholars, 98% of whom are first-generation college students. And this year, a record 125 CSF seniors celebrated their triumphant graduations from this prestigious school. At the final UW CSF Club meeting for the academic year, members were treated to an evening of Senior Celebration. Filled with music, games, food catered by Chipotle, dessert provided by Trophy Cupcakes, the final meeting showcased club officers’ reflections on their shared camaraderie, past accomplishments and future plans. It also focused on recruiting new members for the upcoming academic year, ultimately filling all club officer positions with an amazing group of students eager to continue building CSF community at UW. In addition, graduating seniors received their graduation cords to proudly wear during their graduation ceremonies.

To further personalize the experience, CSF Program Manager Rosalynn Guillen sent out personalized cards and care packages to seniors who were unable to attend in person. “Being a first-generation student is akin to being a brave trailblazer who ventures into unknown realms, rife with unspoken norms and hidden obstacles,” Rosalynn conveys. “First-gen students become proficient in an entirely new way of life, while paving the way for others to follow. This community of students encapsulates the beginning of higher academic achievement, the establishment of strong financial security and the rise of intergenerational advancement.  This underscores the significance of reserving moments and opportunities for celebration, both for those achieving their milestones, but also for those that will follow.”

Summer joy inside and outside the classroom

CSF-Seattle’s year-end celebrations extended beyond the university campus, culminating in the regional summer BBQ held at North SeaTac Park. This event, hosted within an accessible 60-mile radius of the region’s schools, gathered an energetic group of first-year college students.  “My team and I want to provide students with experiences that allow them to feel cared for while allowing coaches to be seen as the humans that they are (not just coaches),” CSF Program Manager Diana Algomeda said.

Bringing together students, staff, coaches and high school advisors from various institutions, the Regional Summer BBQ encapsulated the spirit of community all of our regions are proud to represent. As with many CSF events, even the chosen vendors have significance. Food was catered by O.P.’s, a Black-owned neighborhood mainstay, and surprise dessert was catered by a Latinx-owned ice cream truck.

The day’s activities included lawn games, raffles and theme-based activities that ensured maximum engagement. The sight of students connecting over delicious food, ice cream and games underscored the power of shared experiences. “Many of our students work in addition to going to school full time and we want them to look forward to connecting with their CSF family when possible for a fun and relaxing time,” Diana reflected. “I personally enjoyed seeing students and coaches connect around delicious food, ice cream, music, and games. As my team and I now say ‘We got the vibes.’”

The power of shared experience

Success is not merely the culmination of hard work; it’s a tapestry woven with dedication, perseverance, and celebration. The events hosted by CSF college coaches exemplify our commitment to fostering a sense of community, acknowledging achievements, and creating lasting memories. As our students continue on their academic journey, they carry with them the knowledge that their accomplishments are not just milestones but moments to be cherished.
