Governor Jay Inslee and former Governors Gary Locke and Christine Gregoire joined business and community representatives for an outstanding day of golf Sept. 13 at the 20th annual Governors’ Cup Golf Tournament.
The event, held at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge, raised over $535,000 to benefit the Washington State Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth.
Governors Locke, Inslee and Gregoire along with College Success Foundation president and CEO James Dorsey started the morning with a welcome, thanking sponsors for helping foster youth achieve their college dreams.
CSF Alumna Destiny shared how the scholarship changed her life and the lives of other youth in foster care at the outdoor reception and awards ceremony following the tournament.
“The door to a better life was opened, and the weight CSF lifted off my shoulders by paying for school gave me my first advantage in life,” Destiny said. “I’d fought a lot of uphill battles, but lack of resources didn’t have to be one of them.” Read more about Destiny’s story.
One sponsoring company was so moved by Destiny’s speech that they donated an extra $25,000 to the scholarship fund and committed to providing summer internships to scholarship recipients studying for STEM careers.
Former Governor Gary Locke and College Success Foundation established the Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth in 2001 to recognize the long, often difficult journey that foster youth take to higher education. Over the past 18 years, the tournament has awarded more than 500 college scholarships to foster youth in Washington state.
Next year’s tournament and program will be on September 12, 2022. For more information on how you can be involved, contact Madeline Mulloy.
