Passport Student Voice: Haddie’s Story
In her own words, Passport student Haddie explains how her Passport student support coach, Anjilica Gonzalez, has provided guidance and support during her college journey.
I have only positive feedback for Anjilica. She has helped me so much with literally everything. She’s even helped me with things she’s not a part of or doesn’t know anything about. She has definitely been a good friend to me in general.
I met her fall quarter last year, and it’s because my old advisor was leaving the university. He introduced me to Anjilica. When it comes to motivating me and inspiring me, Anjilica does all she can do. If you need tutoring, or someone to talk to, or if there’s something you need help with, she’s always here for that.
Whenever there is a concern of mine, I’m okay texting her and just asking her about it. Asking for help can be hard for a lot of students, especially if you don’t know if the person you’re talking to can help you or not, but I feel very okay and open to texting her with any questions I have. Even if she doesn’t know the answer, she takes time out of her day to help and go find the answers for me. We talk through phone calls, texting, emails, and on Zoom.
I want other students to be okay with getting comfortable with their coach or advisors. Get close to somebody because they will help you in so many ways, more than you think.
To be completely honest, without Anjilica I probably would have dropped out. I would just say to start emailing your support staff more! All it takes is a few emails before you get comfortable and realize how quickly she answers and how good she is with time management. She doesn’t ever make me wait. She’s always available to me, and I want everyone to get close to her.
Since getting to know Anjilica, I’ve definitely grown in the way of motivating myself. She’s given me so many study ideas, so many resources, and places to get help. I’m the type to figure it out myself, or do it myself, and it’s hard for me to ask for help. But knowing that about myself, Anjilica is someone I can come to at any time. There are so many people to talk with, and I can ask her for anything, and she would do anything she could to help me.
I even interviewed her for one of my classes! She’s comfortable. She’s real with me. She’s professional, but we’re connected on a deeper level, too.
When we talk on the phone, she doesn’t sound like she’s trying to be too authoritarian. She does her job so well. I’m one of so many people she supports, and I know that getting help from her is helping me. In that way, I learn from her.
Anjilica also helps me see who I want to be when I graduate. She is helping people, and that’s what I want to do, too.
